Cold Rolled Coils & Sheets
Once hot rolled steel has cooled, it is re-rolled at room temperature to achieve improved dimensions and surface quality. Essentially, cold rolled steel is hot rolled steel that is further processed after it has been rolled.
In technical terms, cold rolled steel refers to only sheets undergoing compression between rollers, but it is commonly used to describe a wide range of finishing processes. In steel forms such as bars and tubes, “drawn” means not rolled, but pulled. Hot rolled stock is refined with cold finishing processes such as turning, grinding, and polishing.
The following characteristics are often associated with cold rolled steel:
- Surfaces with better finishes and tighter tolerances
- The touch of smooth surfaces is often oily
- Bar edges and corners are well defined, and they are often square and true
- The straightness and concentricity of tubes make them more convenient
